ABOUT YOUR QUALIFICATION

Your Trainer& Assessor will discuss your course specifics…

  • Course information, including core units of competency and elective
    units of competency
  • Student Study Plan
  • Assessment Extensions – a request to your Trainer and Assessor must be
    made via email for an extension (prior to the due date on your Student Study Plan)
  • JSW Business Rules – students can ONLY be enrolled into 5 units of competency
    (maximum) at any one time.

Failure to complete and submit assessments according to your Student Study Plan may result in you being excluded from continuation of your training.

ASSESSMENT SUBMISSIONS
  • Every assessment submission MUST include a completed and signed Student Assessment Cover Sheet;
  • Trainers & Assessors will make available both a hard copy and an electronic version of the Student Assessment Cover Sheet.
  • Before you submit your assessment, please ensure that you take a copy for your records;
  • Trainers & Assessors will provide an email address for assessment submissions, which will provide student with a receipt of delivery via return email.

PlagiarismASSESSMENT SUBMISSIONSPLAGIARISM

You should not attempt to pass off work of another person as your own.
It should be possible for a reader to check the information and ideas which you have used by referring to the original source material. In which regard, you must make note and acknowledge material or content from a third party source, of any nature, used by you and that notation should be sufficiently accurate to enable the source to be easily located and checked.

If you are unsure whether to, or how to make an acknowledgement, then please ask your Trainer & Assessor. In the event that plagiarism is discovered then the offending assessment involved will be deemed as being “not competent” and penalties may apply. These can include formal counselling, a verbal and written warning and/or removal from the course. You will be instructed to resubmit a completed and compliant assessment task should you not be removed from the course.

ASSESSMENT SUPPORT

It is important that students are adequately supported through the assessment process.

Students are provided with:

  • Adequate time to practice and acquire their skills and knowledge prior to the assessment
  • Equal opportunity to demonstrate their competencies/skills and knowledge
  • Appropriate levels of learning support as required
  • Feedback on assessment results
  • Support in addressing skills or knowledge gaps identified in the assessment
LANGUAGE, LITERACY AND NUMERACY

Each training package sets a minimum requirement in language, literacy and numeracy skills of participants, with which JSW must abide.

JSW makes appropriate concessions for language, literacy and numeracy issues of students where these concessions do not compromise the requirements of the relevant Training Package and the integrity, equity and fairness of assessment.

All training and assessment is conducted in English. All JSW Trainers & Assessors are trained in supporting the LLN needs of students.

WITHDRAWING FROM YOUR COURSE

Each unit of competency that you study has its own census date, this date is determined as 20% of your unit of competency delivery.

If you choose to withdraw you must withdraw officially by close of business on the census date (or before) using the Enrolment Adjustment Form (located on the website).

Your census date for each unit of competency is indicated on your statement of fees.

It is your responsibility to check if you still owe fees even if you withdraw.

Note: If students do not officially withdraw, within the limits as previously explained, they will still be liable for full payment of any outstanding fees.

EXCURSIONS

There will be times we will go on excursions…

Where possible JSW will try to utilise the JSW bus or work vehicles however there may be times where you are required to transport yourself to and from locations.

Students will be given fair notice if this is to occur to ensure all students have arrangements made.

During you enrolment process you will be asked to complete a transport permission form.  This needs to be completed to allow JSW to transport you when required for training purposes.

NOW…..

Student behaviour and expectations do not change if you are offsite…  Disciplinary action will occur whether breaches are onsite or offsite.

 

EDUCATIONAL MENTORING AND GUIDANCE

Mentoring at JSWJSW staff can provide support to students in regards to time management, coping with learning difficulties and stress management in relation to your training needs.

Jobs & Skills CentreJobs & Skills WA offer free services which include:

  • Individual career guidance and career action planning
  • Information on training, education and employment options

  • Examine the requirements of the modern workplace
  • Employability and job search workshops
  • Resume, interview skills and application letters assistance
SUPPORT SERVICES

At JSW we strive to help our students overcome barriers to training. Some of the support services we offer are outlined below, please ask your trainer for more details.

Jobs & Skills CentreCareer guidance & assistance with resumes – Jobs and Skills Centres offer a range of free services, support, information and assistance. They can help if you’re looking for:

  • information and guidance on your career choices;
  • information about training and courses;
  • help to choose the right training course or qualification to suit your personal, work or career goals;
  • information about different industry areas and occupations;
  • help with job searching and job matching;
  • skills and qualification recognition information;
  • apprenticeship and traineeship assistance; and
  • culturally sensitive employment and career services for Aboriginal people.

Provision of meals  – At all JSW campuses breakfast and/or lunch provisions are supplied for student meals and snacks.

Transport – If transport is a barrier to you attending training please talk with your trainer. JSW may be able to offer pick up/drop off transport for you. We can also offer subsidised access to public transport.

Mentoring – JSW believes mentoring and guidance can help students successfully complete their training, please ask your trainer for details.

FEES AND CHARGES

On enrolment fees and charges for your course will have been explained to you and you will have a copy of your fees and charges form. If you have a concession card you must give us the updated one when it expires. Failure to do this may lead to you being charged full fees for your course.

Unless otherwise requested JSW will invoice you as you progress through your course.

All course fees need to be paid in full before your certificate can be issued.

HOUSEKEEPING

JSW Class and break timesCLASS AND BREAK TIMES
Classes commence at 9:00am and finish at 3:00pm on the days your class is in training.
You are entitled to breaks: Morning break 15mins – Lunch break 30mins

The times are allocated for each classroom. Your trainer will advise you of your break times.


ABSENCES

If you are going to be absent for any period of time, or need to start late or finish early, your trainer needs to be advised by either via text, phone or e-mail prior to class starting.Assessment Submissions

BUNBURY TRAINING CENTRE

Parking lot on the Corner of Stuart and Bourke Streets.  All day parking costs $1.90.

  • DO NOT Park in the car spaces or on the grass verge in front of, along the side of or at the rear of any of the JSW sites.
  • DO NOT Park in any car spaces at any adjoining/surrounding businesses
  • DO NOT Park in the driveway or on grassed areas of any of the adjoining/surrounding private properties.

BUSSELTON TRAINING CENTRE

  • DO NOT Park in any car spaces at any adjoining/surrounding businesses
  • DO NOT Park in the driveway or on grassed areas of any of the adjoining/surrounding private properties.

MANDURAH TRAINING CENTRE

  • DO NOT Park in any car spaces at any adjoining/surrounding businesses
  • DO NOT Park in the driveway or on grassed areas of any of the adjoining/surrounding private properties.

Personal property at JSWPERSONAL PROPERTY

JSW is not responsible for any personal property left unsupervised in classrooms.

We have a large number of students from different programs attending JSW. Please be mindful of this when leaving valuables in classrooms.

There is a bike rack located at the front of the training facility at number 5 Bourke Street and at the rear of the Busselton Training Centre. It is your responsibility to lock your bike/scooter if you choose to use it.


EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS

As an adult learning facility we expect you to behave in a professional and courteous manner whilst on our premises.

When on your breaks please stay on JSW premises and do not loiter around adjoining businesses.

If you are a smoker, there is only one assigned smoking area for each location.  Your Trainer & Assessor will advise where this area is located when you undertake your site orientation.


TOILET DO’S AND DON’TS

  • DO leave the toilet as you find it – clean and tidy.
  • DO let your Trainer & Assessor know if the toilet has run out of hand soap, towels or toilet paper.
  • DO put all sanitary items in the designated sanitary bin… do not flush them.
  • DO NOT graffiti, damage, dirty any of the toilet facilities.
  • DO NOT smoke in the toilets.

KITCHEN & WHERE TO BUY FOOD

JSW Bunbury and Busselton have kitchen facilities for students to store/heat/cook their lunch. 

These include:

  • Student Fridge
  • Tea and coffee making facilities (not the Espresso making equipment or machine)
  • Microwave
  • Stove/oven

Tea/coffee/sugar and milk are provided for students in all training facilities including Mandurah.

If you did not cook it, bring it or create it …. You do not eat it.

IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CLEAN UP AFTER USE. 

If you choose to purchase your lunch there are a few cafes close by that you can attend in your breaks.


Not permitted!ALCOHOL, ILLICIT DRUGS, PROHIBITED SUBSTANCES

Are not tolerated at JSW

When on JSW property or involved in a JSW activity, Students must not:

  • Be in possession of any alcohol, illicit drugs, non-prescribed medication or other prohibited substances.
  • Consume/smoke/inhale/inject any alcohol, illicit drug or other prohibited substances
  • Possess any drug-related equipment such as syringes (except in cases of lawful medical use), pipes, or other smoking implements, etc. (Misuse of Drugs Act 1981) or equipment related to the use of alcohol, drug or substance related products;
  • Deliberately inhale solvents or any other substances;
  • Possess or use prohibited drugs in accordance with Misuse of Drugs Act 1981;
  • Arrange for distribution or the sale or purchasing of any of the above mentioned.

Engaging in this behaviour will result in  disciplinary action.

  • Knives
  • Guns
  • Nunchucks
  • Knuckle dusters
  • Anything that can be considered a weapon or cause damage to people and/or property
  • Spray paint
  • Petrol
  • Any pornographic or indecent images/videos/magazines

If you have thought of anything else that should be on this list …. Don’t bring it

Engaging in this behaviour will result in  disciplinary action.


Not permitted!CRIMINAL ACTIVITY, THEFT OR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY

JSW defines criminal activity as breaking the law as per state or federal law. This may include but is not limited to: possession, selling and supplying drugs; stealing; vandalism, assault, threats to harm or danger self or others, fraud.

A few simple points to remember

  • If it is not yours do not touch it, take it, use it unless you have permission from the owner
  • If it is not yours do not break it or damage it in any way

Any theft or damage to any property belonging to JSW, staff or students will NOT BE TOLERATED.

Engaging in this behaviour will result in  disciplinary action.


DISCIPLINARY ACTION

JSW has 3 phases of disciplinary action for any behavioural breaches.

  • Verbal warning
  • Written Warning

Serious breaches or a combination of the above 2 can result in Expulsion.

You will be notified of any breaches and given an opportunity to discuss any behavioural breaches.

BULLYING, HARRASSMENT AND/OR INTIMIDATION

Not permitted!Bullying is when an individual or group misuses power to target another individual or group to intentionally threaten or harm them on more than one occasion. This may involve verbal, physical, relational and psychological forms of bullying.  Teasing or fighting between peers is not necessarily bullying.
(Behaviour Management in Schools policy, Department of Education WA).

BULLYING includes any form of verbal, emotional/psychological, physical, cyber or as a bystander, to any student, member of staff or visitor to JSW.

Engaging in this behaviour will result in  disciplinary action.

DISCRIMINATION

Not tolerated!Direct discrimination takes place when a person is treated less favourably than another person, in the same or similar circumstances, on one or more of the grounds and in one of the areas of public life covered by the Equal Opportunity Act 1984.

Indirect discrimination happens when an apparently neutral rule has a negative effect on a substantially higher proportion of people with a particular ground, or protected attribute or characteristic, e.g. race, compared to people without that attribute or characteristic, and the rule is unreasonable in the circumstances.  This is sometimes called systemic discrimination.

JSW does not tolerate any form of discrimination based on:

SAFETY

OK… so the last section of slides may seem harsh. Our rules and expectations are there for a reason…

We have a duty of care to ensure the safety of you, the Trainer & Assessor and others.

a moral or legal obligation to ensure the safety or well-being of others


FIRST AID & MEDICAL SITUATIONS

JSW have a number of staff who are trained in First Aid, Mental Health First Aid and to respond to critical situations.

If there is a medical situation advise a JSW staff member ASAP.

If you are under the age of 18 or you are unable to respond, your emergency contact will be notified in the event of a First Aid or medical situation.

JSW will not transport students to hospital or to seek medical advice.  If the situation requires urgent treatment an ambulance will be called.


REPORTING INJURY, ACCIDENTS, HAZARDS & INCIDENTS

We try our hardest to ensure safety in our workplace however, we need your help to ensure it stays safe!

If you see:

  • An Injury – staff, students or visitor
  • An accident – in or around our premises or vehicles
  • A Hazard – no matter how small, or
  • An incident

You need to report this to a JSW staff member as soon as possible. We will support you to fill out the appropriate forms.


EMERGENCY PROCEDURES PARTICIPATION IN EVACUATION DRILLS

In the event of an emergency or evacuation you will hear the alarm sound.

Please listen to your Trainer & Assessor, and move in an orderly manner through the signed exits to the safe muster points.  Please do not run or leave the location until you are checked off by your Trainer & Assessor.

THIS IS IMPORTANT AS WE NEED TO KNOW THAT EVERYBODY IS OUT AND SAFE

Trainer please advise students of muster points for your building.

Every term at random, JSW will hold an evacuation/fire drill which students must participate in.

We encourage feedback to ensure the safety of everybody involved.

KEEPING THINGS UP TO DATE

Students need to ensure that their contact details are up to date

  • We will email you
  • We will call you
  • We will text you
  • We will mail stuff to you
  • If your details are not up to date you may miss important information regarding your training.
  • If your details are not up to date you may be left behind.
  • If your details are not up to date you may not get your certificate and we will charge you a replacement fee.

We appreciate any feedback… this allows us to modify, adjust or keep our training as awesome as it already is.

An online satisfaction/feedback form can be found on our website www.jsw.org.au

JSW also conducts students surveys. These are completed towards the end point and completion of training.

We encourage students to complete these surveys honestly as they help us to determine what works and what doesn’t.  It helps us to implement changes to ensure we keep getting better and better at what we do.
